Sadie slept fitfully most of the night. The bed was slightly uncomfortable, the air a bit too cold, and a sudden pounding out front went on for too long. The nuisance finally roused her. She opened her eyes and identified the sounds as someone knocking on her front door. She grabbed her cell phone and blinked as much as possible to see it was just after seven a.m. She sat up in bed, half-stuck in her dream. The part of her brain trying desperately to come to life thought it was too early to be awake. She grabbed her Glock, crawled out of bed, and moved toward the door, somewhat wobbly on her bare feet. Rubbing her eyes and trying to fix her hair, she wasn’t sure what was happening. Gun in her hand, she walked to the front door, to more banging, and said, “Hold on, damn.”

She opened the door to Brad, while standing behind it to hide her body. She wore white boy-cut underwear and a black tank top, no bra. Before saying she needed to get dressed, she watched in horror as Brad strolled into the small Airbnb, holding two cups of coffee.

He turned around, surprised by her bare legs and underwear. Groaning audibly, he said, “Don’t answer the door like that, Gray. What the balls?”

She closed the door, crossed her arms over her breasts, and said, “What the balls yourself, Brad? I didn’t invite you in!”

With closed eyes, he handed her a coffee—a liquid truce—then said, “I won’t look if you put some freaking pants on.”

Sadie took the coffee, grabbed a handful of Brad’s perfect hair, and squeezed it, holding his neck immobile. He fought her the best he could without spilling his coffee.

“I didn’t do it on purpose—let go!” he barked.

A moment later, she shoved his head away and said, “One look at my butt when I walk away, and I’ll come back and make sure you’re wearing this hot coffee.”

“I don’t want to see your butt, for heaven’s sake—just go.”

She walked to her room, pulled on a pair of pants, and slipped into a bra and T-shirt. When she was presentable, she fashioned her hair into a ponytail and returned to the living room.

“Why don’t you tell me why you’re here at the ass crack of dawn without calling,” she said, yawning.

“Because it’s seven a.m., Gray. We’re not on vacation, and the early bird gets the worm.”

“What does that even mean?” she asked.

“It means I got a text this morning,” he grinned, trying to contain his excitement. “The text included an address in Colfax.”

“From who, and for what?”

“Not Miller or Ruiz,” Brad said, grabbing her attention. Before Sadie could question his response, he gave her the answer. “Detective Swartz sent me a clip of the surveillance video from Reno, the 4K video Reno PD got the woman to release without a court order.”

“Holy cow, why didn’t you say that?” she sat up and asked.

“Because I was busy wondering why the hell I was looking at your butt,” he said in his defense.
